Museums are closed on Monday!

Monday, May 26, 2014 – Happy Memorial Day, Everyone!

Hello!

Dinner last night was very average, so will not include much about it.  Suffice to say that on a Sunday night, with only one other table occupied, the menu selection had suddenly disappeared; most of the items listed were not available!  Rather than getting a salad or pasta, which was my inclination, I got – you guessed it! – CHICKEN yet again!  Robert had kofta, which I believe are ground meatballs…at any rate, I headed to bed immediately upon returning to our room, and had a really good night’s sleep!  (Always important!)

Coffee to Go!

Could have stayed there all day...
Up around 6 a.m. and downstairs for breakfast about 7 a.m.  Finally ready and out the door by 8:30 a.m. with our first stop being Goreme in Cappadocia.  When we were here two years ago, our cave hotel was in Goreme, and it was just a very nice place to be.  We walked around town – my chance to do a bit of shopping, as well! – and then had lovely glasses of fresh squeezed orange juice at a lovely coffee shop called “Coffee To Go.”  I could have stayed there all day!  If/when we come back to this area, Goreme is definitely the place to stay!

We took some very back roads to get to Aksaray, as well as encountered another rain storm, which was great!  Would that we could bring some of it back to Tucson!!  Saw our hotel – Grand Altuntas – from over a mile away, as we came down the hill toward town.  It is an 8-story glass and stone building, looks brand new, with lovely rooms and facilities!

Checked in and then headed downstairs to their lovely restaurant for lunch (it was now about 1:30 p.m.)
Me and veggie soup!

Stunning dining room!
Some confusion … Robert thought he had ordered a salad, but he had, in fact, ordered a plate of lamb on eggplant.  We both had bowls of wonderful vegetable soup to start – that was GREAT!  My salad came with some sort of mystery meat on it – as well as cucumbers and pickles, none of which were described in the picture or written description on the menu.

So, I ordered a rocket salad – arugula with onions, carrots and tomato.  That was fine; I left the mystery meat…then, back upstairs for some rest.

Today, being Monday, all of the local museums are closed.  That means that tomorrow, we have three museums to visit – Aksaray, Nigde and Neveshir (fortunately makes a nice loop trip!) as well as two excavation sites.  It does sound like a nice full day.  And, we’re able to get the French Open on EuroSport, so we’re watching tennis commented in Turkish (I think!).  Also, R just went downstairs to ask “what’s up with the air conditioning or lack thereof?” when suddenly – WHOOSH – we’ve got a/c!  Guess the lesson there is that it never hurts to ask!

Can’t believe today’s blog is so short, but I will add more after our dinner experience tonight!

PS – Just back from a very good dinner downstairs!  Robert ordered Troud (brave man…and that is how they spelled it on the menu…) and I ordered tortellini with a pesto cream sauce – excellent!  No dessert, as we had such a large and varied lunch!  We then toured the spa facilities – incredible, to say the least!  I thought I would try a Turkish bath tomorrow when we got back from sightseeing, but apparently the masseuse won’t be there until “yesterday.”Hmmm…
